11 Ways to Avoid Career-Limiting Moves at the Company Outing

Companies often host outings for a little fun, relaxation and to show appreciation to their employees. Even though these are informal fun settings, this can be a field filled with career landmines if you are not aware and what once seemed like a promising career can quick disintegrate into career disaster.

At a recent company gathering, a young woman took the time to enjoy the "party" her company threw for the staff. Unfortunately, she had a little too much to drink and proceeded to make quite a nuisance of herself to her colleagues and the head of the company. Before the event, she was thought of as a possible rising star within the organization, but that reputation, which took years to build, quickly imploded. Here are a few guidelines to ensure that your behavior still says you are a professional

1. Attend the event.  The company outing should be treated like a business meeting. Make sure you attend as your absence will be noted.

2. Dress appropriately.  The rule of dressing conservatively still applies. Avoid short shorts, clothing with inappropriate or tasteless slogans, etc. Swimwear should be conservative; you want coworkers to remember your professional character after the outing, not an unforgettable image of you in revealing swimwear or picnic attire.

3. Limit alcohol.  If alcohol is served, stop after one or two drinks. Choose beer or wine and pass on the hard liquor.

4. Watch your communication.  Think about your conversation topics and steer clear of the temptation to gossip or tell colorful jokes. There's a tendency to be a bit loose with the tongue in informal settings. Keep in mind that you are still being observed and evaluated unofficially.

5. Meet new people.  If you work for a large company, take the opportunity to meet new people and strengthen old connections; avoid staying with familiar groups or social cliques all day. The wider your network, the better your chances are for advancement and recognition within the organization.

6. Participate.  If games are being played and you are physically able, get involved. If the outing is at a golf course and you are not a golfer, be adventurous and take a few lessons before the event or consider taking a lesson that day. If these options are not feasible, use the time to network . Do not take a book and read all day or isolate yourself in some other way.

7. Be gracious at the buffet line.  Take moderate portions and don't cut the line. Go back for seconds only after everyone has had the opportunity to go through the line.

8. Acknowledge others.  Compliment co-workers on recent accomplishments

9. Prepare your family.  If the event is open to the entire family and you choose to bring your children, ensure they follow the rules, display appropriate behavior, and supervise them at all times.  Prepare your spouse so they understand your company environment as well. Only bring your pet if pets are permitted and respect those who may not share your views about how adorable your pet is.

10.  Say thanks.  Make sure to express your gratitude to the organizers and your manager/supervisor.

11.  Have a pleasant attitude.  Have a ready smile throughout the day and make every effort to enjoy yourself.  Halt the complaining.
