Losing the War but Winning the Peace

Folks forget the number of compromises that failed leading up to the civil war, the 3/5ths compromise, the Missouri compromise (1820), the Compromise of 1850, read the confederate constitution https://en.wikipedia.org/.../Confederate_States_Constitution. Much of America at that time thought and fought thinking that they were on the right side of history. The 1877 compromise and the abandonment of black people, the national popularity of the book the Klansmen and the blockbuster movie Birth of a Nation, perhaps indicated that maybe the south really did not fully lose...certainly Plessy v Ferguson helped many in the south to continue believe that they were right and dare I mention the the ascendancy of the KKK. (Not to mention George Wallace spouting segregation now segregation forever while running in the presidential primary season.) In other words the power of the confederacy did not evaporate  due to General's Lee and Grant signing a piece of paper...
The Constitution of the Confederate States of America...
