Folks
forget the number of compromises that failed leading up to the civil
war, the 3/5ths compromise, the Missouri compromise (1820), the Compromise of 1850, read the confederate constitution https://en.wikipedia.org/.../Confederate_States_Constitution. Much of America at that time thought and fought thinking that they were
on the right side of history. The 1877 compromise and the abandonment of
black people, the national popularity of the book the Klansmen and the blockbuster
movie Birth of a Nation, perhaps indicated that maybe the south really
did not fully lose...certainly Plessy v Ferguson helped many in the
south to continue believe that they were right and dare I mention the
the ascendancy of the KKK. (Not to mention George Wallace spouting segregation now segregation forever while running in the presidential primary season.) In other words the power of the confederacy
did not evaporate due to General's Lee and Grant signing a piece of paper...
