Judge sets trial date for Cincy NAACP election case

The progress of the NAACP's Cincinnati chapter's elections will remain on hold for the foreseeable future. Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas Judge Steven Martin has set a hearing in the voter-suppression lawsuit filed on behalf of the Cincinnati NAACP chapter.
Martin will hear both sides during the Feb. 13 hearing and determine how the case proceeds if a settlement isn't reached outside of court. Martin declined to comment further because the case is ongoing, he said.
Martin originally halted the local NAACP chapter's December officer elections after finding probable cause of voter suppression.
National NAACP representatives could be called in to testify in the case. In the original lawsuit filed on behalf of the local chapter, laywer Curt Hartman named a member of the national office who was overseeing the election. Six of the local chapter's own members are also named in the lawsuit.
Lawyer Janaya Trotter Bratton, who represents the national NAACP representative and the other defendants, could not be reached for comment.
Hartman said he is hopeful the two sides can reach a settlement outside of court.
