New Haven Independent: Obituaries | Lisa Mayo Tinney, 50
Lisa Lorraine Mayo Tinney, 50, was born on November 27, 1964 in Richmond, VA to Dr. Reginald and Patsy (Wallace) Mayo entered eternal rest on January 16, 2015.
The first thing one noticed about Lisa was the beautiful infectious smile, with which she greeted everyone. Her closest family and friends remember her as a terrific host who went the extra mile to make her guests comfortable. Lisa was an informal interior decorator. She could walk into any room and tell exactly how to make it beautiful. Lisa was skilled with arts and crafts and particularly gifted at creating centerpieces, door wreaths, and holiday decorations. Lisa was quiet but energetic. In many ways, Lisa was a perfectionist and worked non-stop to get things “right.” Lisa loved to travel and take cruises, but her favorite place to vacation was Martha’s Vineyard, where she spent her summers.
Lisa attended Hamden Public Schools and graduated from Hamden High School where she was a member of the Gospel Choir. She matriculated to Virginia State University where she participated in the pre-alumni association and the biology club. Lisa graduated Cum Laude with a BA in Business Administration and made the National Dean’s List. After college, Lisa worked for the Tele-communications company, formerly known as SNET as a Customer Service Representative. Family and close friends will remember Lisa as someone who balanced straightforwardness with diplomacy. She loved to support others and was always willing to roll-up her sleeves and help. She was an advocate for people being treated fairly and known for saying: “when you’re right, you’re right, and when you’re wrong you’re wrong.”
Lisa loved her family, especially her nephews. She loved her church family at Immanuel Missionary Baptist Church. Lisa was a member of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. and was a strong active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and The Links, Inc. Along with her parents, Lisa leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Gary Tinney; brothers, Reginald Mayo, Jr. (Kelly Mero) of Hamden, Shawn Mayo (Nadine Onfroy), of FL; nephews, Reginald, III, Riece, Rylan, and Shawn, Jr. aunts and uncles, relatives and friends in Virginia, New Haven, and Martha’s Vineyard. A wake will take place Friday at Immanuel Missionary Baptist Church, 1324 Chapel St. New Haven, CT 06511 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. with an additional viewing Saturday at the church from 8:00 -9:00 a.m. A celebration of her life will take place Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. Interment will follow the celebration of life on Saturday in Beaverdale Memorial Park, New Haven.
