Black Nativity by Langston Hughes To Delight City This Holiday Season

New Haven –

New World Arts Northeast, Inc. presents BLACK NATIVITY by Langston Hughes.  This iconic holiday classic play, a retelling of the Nativity with an intentional all-black cast, will be presented on Friday, December 19th at 8 PM, and Saturday, December 20th at 2:00 and 7:30 PM at the Episcopal Church of St. Paul and St. James in New Haven on the corner of Chapel and Olive Streets.

The 2014 cast is a collaboration between two New Haven dynastic gospel families: the Brown family, who spawned the Salt and Pepper Gospel Choir, and the Monk/Flake family, who spawned The Monk Family Singers. Performing artist Dana Elizabeth Fripp, along with Broadway veterans Wes Yarbor and Charles “C.C.” Brown  round out the main cast.  Dancer Taylor Morrison will portray Mary.

“Black Nativity by Langston Hughes is a well-loved piece of art, enjoyed by New Haven audiences for decades. I love the flexibility of the script, which allows for different interpretations, depending on the vision of the directors. This version will include music, dance and spoken word, delivered by four generations of performers, which I am excited about,” says Aleta Staton, Executive Director of New World Arts Northeast.

New Haven’s 2014 production of Black Nativity by Langston Hughes is supported in part by The Community Foundation of Greater New Haven. Tickets are $15 general and $5 for seniors and children 12 and under. There is a 10% discount for groups of 10 or more.

New World Arts Northeast, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-stock corporation with a focus on the creation and production of affordable arts programs and events that generate positive community development and promote community visitation. “As a local artist and arts administrator, I have participated in the rich arts experiences that often emanate from this community. This is an opportunity to bestow the gift of hope, peace, family and art to New Haven,” says Staton, director of the 2014 production.

BLACK NATIVITY by Langston Hughes is presented by arrangement with Dramatic Publishing Company of Woodstock, Illinois.
