For years the military has been giving surplus equipment to local police, everything from blankets and medical kits to grenade launchers and armored personnel carriers. How does this affect the way police enforce the law?
Join us on Wednesday, November 5, for a discussion of law enforcement, its use of military equipment and the impact on local communities. The featured speakers will be Dean Esserman, New Haven police chief, and David McGuire, staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut. Paul Bass, editor of the New Haven Independent, will serve as moderator.
The event, sponsored by the ACLU of Connecticut and its Greater New Haven chapter, is free and open to the public. It will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in Room 208 of William Harkness Hall at Yale University, 100 Wall Street, New Haven. Light refreshments will be served.
Dean Esserman has been New Haven’s police chief since 2011 and previously served as police chief of Stamford, Connecticut; Providence, Rhode Island; and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York. He is a graduate of the New York University School of Law.
David McGuire has been the staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut for the past seven years, specializing in digital privacy, prisoners’ rights and free speech issues. He is a graduate of the Western New England College of Law.
