Rutgers Emergency Medical Assistance To Fight Ebola in West Africa- Starting in
Liberia

Rutgers has a long historical connection to West Africa, particularly Liberia, including
working closely with the University of Liberia and Cuttington University. We are proud
that our own Rutgers Professor, Dr. Emmet Dennis was invited by the President of
Liberia to assume the Presidency of the University of Liberia, where he is now rebuilding
this public institution of higher education. At Rutgers, we have several large international
programs with both the University of Liberia and Cuttington University and other
organizations in Liberia. Rutgers faculty and staff conduct research in Liberia, many of
our Liberian colleagues have been to Rutgers. We have been formally asked by the
University of Liberia and Cuttington University to assist them in addressing the Ebola
outbreak. Given this connection and the strong West African community in New Jersey,
the ongoing outbreak of the Ebola virus in Liberia has prompted Rutgers to establish an
Emergency Action Committee to assist its partnering Liberian institutions to combat this
growing threat to the security and health of the people of West Africa starting in Liberia.

Our university partners, friends, family and colleagues from Liberia have asked us to
help. They are desperately in need of specific medical supplies that are not available.
These supplies are needed to provide protection to doctors, nurses and healthcare workers
currently combating the Ebola epidemic within the country of Liberia. Rutgers will first
focus its efforts by providing logistical support and in providing needed medical supplies
for the JFK hospital and teaching clinic of the University of Liberia, the Phoebe Hospital
and the Agave Clinic at Cuttington University. Can you join us in this effort? Rutgers
University is bringing together a team of experts in medicine, health care and emergency
responders. We are being joined in our response by the Rutgers community of faculty,
staff, students and friends! We are also being joined in this effort by the Princeton Fire
Department as well! Your donations will go directly to the procurement of specific
medical supplies now in short supply or not available at all. These materials will then be
sent initially to Liberia to the above hospitals and clinics. We have logistical teams
waiting in Liberia to receive the materials to ensure the supplies reach their intended
destination. All supplies are being inventoried and tracked, all time and effort is being
provided by volunteers.

You can help in the following ways:

1. You can give money which will then be used to purchase the medical supplies.
Link to: http://www.gofundme.com/d12hp8
This is a safe and secure site, easy to use and we will acknowledge your donations within
24 hrs. Please note that all efforts on our Rutgers end involve Rutgers faculty, staff,
students and volunteers. None of the donated funds will be used to pay for anyone’s time!
This is an all volunteer effort!!!

Efforts are also underway to explore openning up a RU donation site as that will make it

easier for tax deductibles. Rather than waiting for this to happen, and whereas we are
dealing with an emergency where time is of the essence, we are moving as needed using
this GoFundMe site!

2. You can help by forwarding this message to your own family, friends, work and
church colleagues and help spread the word!
That is through your efforts in letting others know and directing them to this donation
site, you can really make a major impact- and we need this assistance!

3. Should you instead prefer to purchase the medical supplies yourself, rather than
give a financial donation, that is great too. We have been requested to procure
specific items as listed below. We also provide just as an illustrative example for now
where you can buy them. After this list is the address to where we ask that you bring
or have them shipped too. Again, all donations will be acknowledged. We just ask for
your patience as it may take some time for us to say thank you!
