The State of Connecticut African-American Affairs Commission hosted the Premier Showing of the documentary "Veterans of Color".  The premiere was held on Tuesday, August 5th, 2014 at the Hartford Public Library.  More than 75 people attended the event and the response from the audience was extremely positive.
The documentary is based on interviews with African-American men and women who served in America's Military. These men and women stormed the beaches of Normandy, flew as Tuskegee Airmen, and experienced the pain and chaos of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. The film captures personal accounts that help all Americans understand the challenges faced by African-American veterans during their lifetimes.
The film challenges perceptions and labels historically given to people of color by highlighting their struggles and triumphs. The Commission's goals were to enlighten the public of the many contributions of African-American male and female veterans whose stories might otherwise be lost in history. The Commission also wants to raise awareness among veterans and the community of the service related issues that affect veterans of color that need to be addressed.
U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal addressed the audience. Mr. Connie Nappier, a World War II Veteran and Tuskegee Airman and Sam Beamon, a Viet Nam Veteran shared their personal stories with those in attendance.

The film will be shown throughout the state on dates to be announced.
