Germany calls Somi "The New Nina Simone"
and other great features from
JazzTimes and JazzWise!

On the heels of a fantastic run of sold-out album release shows in Paris, Berlin, and London, the European press has fantastic things to say about the new album and Somi's live show.  DeutschlandRadio Kultur in Germany dubbed Somi "The New Nina Simone" while the UK's preeminent jazz publication JazzWise Magazine exclaimed that Somi's "vivid and provocative" performance and album have "the standard of writing - above all the lyrics and melodies - and vocal performance that make it clear the loudening buzz around the singer is anything but hollow."  In Paris, a national feature on France InterRadio by Marc Fauvelle swooned over Somi's "vocal beauty and its bewitching charm!" (Check out the full articles or audio HERE: DeutschlandRadio Kultur / JazzWise Magazine /FranceInter Radio )

Back in the U.S., this month's issue of the esteemed JazzTimes Magazine offered a fantastic review of "The Lagos Music Salon".  Vocal critic Christopher Loudon says Somi's "voice emerges pure and strong" on an album that marks "a deeply personal journey, from which emerges a magnificently candid, reverent disquisition."  Pick up a copy on your local newstand now if you can!

Somi Awarded USArtists International Grant
by MidAlantic Arts Foundation, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation & The National Endowment for the Arts

Yesterday it was announced that Somi was one of 29 U.S. Performing Artists selected in the highly competetive and final cycle of the 2014 USArtists International (USAI) program.  Over $198,000 was awarded to six theater, ten dance, and thirteen music ensembles and solo artists from across the United States to support their engagements at 42 festivals in 26 countries across the globe.

This is the second time in Somi's career to be awarded this grant and she will use the funds towards her 2015 engagement at the Harare International Festival of the Arts in Zimbabwe.  Needless to say, we are thrilled!

Somi's Debut Performance
at ESSENCE Music Fest

Over the Fourth of July weekend, Somi headed down to New Orleans for her debut appearance at the storied ESSENCE Music Fest where she both performed and had an on-stage interview on the Walmart Stage in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center alongside the likes of R&B favorites Trey Songz and Mali Music.  The festival boasted over 500,000 attendees on this there 20th year and it was a wonderful experience for both Somi and her growing audience.

Special thanks to Congolese designer Kahindo Mateene of Modhanik for Somi's lovely dress!
