Is school segregation making a comeback?
Tonight, FRONTLINE presents Separate and Unequal
— a special report from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where a group of mostly
white, middle-class citizens, dissatisfied with low-performing schools
in their district, are trying to break away and form a new city with its
own separate school system.
Critics
say breakaway efforts like this one may be reversing hard-fought civil
rights gains — but supporters say it's simply about securing a quality
education for their children.
Also this hour: FRONTLINE revisits Omarina Cabrera,
a student from the Bronx who took part in a groundbreaking program to
stem the dropout crisis in America's high-poverty high schools.
Where is Omarina today, two years after she first shared her story in Middle School Moment
?
