The New Haven Hip-Hop Conference presents the multifaceted elements of hip-hop culture and its supporters in order to educate students, parents, teachers, performance and visual artists, scholars, and civic leaders on the genre's myriad social abilities while connecting attendees as resources for each other's work in the community.
Taking place on the campus of Southern Connecticut State University—"an intentionally diverse and comprehensive university"—the NHHHC strives to model academic excellence through its array of scholarly panels; provide access to the community by making the conference affordable and welcoming to a range of hip-hop "practitioners" and those interest in the subject; and engage with social justice and service for the public good by centering the discourse around the positive uses of hip-hop in addressing societal ills. This year's theme is Finding Common Ground: Exploring Interconnections in Social Justice, Media, Education, and Cultural Politics.
