Former New Haven Drill Team to Play New Role
NEW HAVEN >> It’s important for young women in the city to look at other young women as their sisters, and that’s something the Phoenix Drill Team was able to embed in youth decades ago, said Cheryl Proctor.
“They need to learn that the other young women out there in the city are their sisters and they can depend on them and they can learn from them and they can support each other if they open up,” Proctor said. “That’s a difficult thing for young minority girls to do, is to open up.”
Proctor and several alumni of the drill team are organizing a reunion this summer with plans to reestablish their role in the community at a time when they feel the need for strong mentors is great.
The first Reunion Dinner Dance is scheduled for Aug. 16 at Laurel View Country Club in Hamden.
