The Intersection of Sports and the Arts
NEW HAVEN >> With the International Festival of Arts & Ideas in full swing, four well-established public voices will confer Thursday for a “Thinking About Sports” discussion.
Legendary sportswriter Frank Deford, National Public Radio commentator Mike Pesca and award-winning poet (and Yale professor) Elizabeth Alexander will join best-selling author Nicholas Dawidoff at the Yale University Art Gallery to share their thoughts and ideas about sports in society.
Dawidoff, who helped organize the event after being approached by the festival last year, said the idea is to engage all types of people — not just the average sports fan — in thought-provoking conversation that ultimately transcends competition between the lines.
“The world of sports is such an intriguing parallel world that runs right up alongside the everyday world of peoples’ lives,” Dawidoff said. “It is a great way to create an interesting prism through which (we can) look at things well beyond how the actual games are played.”
The panelists likely will address certain topical issues such as the ongoing World Cup (and America’s general resistance to a game that dominates the international sporting scene), NFL player safety and even the fragile status of baseball as America’s pastime.

People the world over love watching—and listening to and reading about—other people playing games. On a warm June evening in the heat of the World Cup in Brazil, the NBA finals, the baseball season and NFL minicamps, the legendary sportswriter Frank Deford, prize-winning poet Elizabeth Alexander, NPR and Slate sportswriter Mike Pesca, and best-selling author Nicholas Dawidoff will discuss sports in society.
Beginning with personal thoughts on spectating and following sports, the panel will address the broader appeal of games in a wide-ranging conversation that promises to engage with everything from how to save football from violence (and baseball from football) to why Americans have been the last to appreciate the truth and beauty in the beautiful game of soccer.
