A
LIFE OF RESILIENCE: Turning Struggle into Art
The Life of Winfred Rembert Explored in Public Event at UCONN Waterbury
WATERBURY - The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University
Connecticut Waterbury Campus will feature artist Winfred Rembert in a
free public event on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at 1:30 in the campus
multi-purpose room (Rooms 113-119).
This event is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the
East Hill Woods Fund, Pathway for Seniors,
Connecticut Community Foundation.
A native of Cuthbert,
Georgia, Winfred Rembert has lived a life of tremendous struggles
including an attempted lynching and years on a chain gang while
incarcerated.
"He was born in 1945, black and poor, in
the rural town of Cuthbert, Georgia. Abandoned by his father and given
away by his mother, who could not afford to care for him, he was adopted
as an infant by his Aunt
Lillian, who raised him as her own."
-Jock Reynolds, Yale Art Gallery
Through it all, he managed
to overcome negative influences, rising to become a frequently
sought-after artist who transfers the memories of his life onto sheets
of leather colored
with fabric dye.
An excerpt of the multiple-award winning film ALL ME: The Life and Times of Winfred Rembert
will be screened at the UCONN event, followed by a talk back and live
interview with the
artist. Guests will be treated to a reception with the artist. The film
has been screened at over 12 film festivals to date. Dr. William J.
Pizzuto, Director of UConn, Waterbury Campus stated, "We are honored to
have a man of Mr. Rembert's artistic acclaim
as a guest on our campus. He has led a remarkable life and serves as a
role model to many." This event is one of many that are part of the
University of Connecticut's "Year of Engagement."
Public Engagement is a
central tenet of our mission at the University of Connecticut, and we
are extremely proud of our tradition of public service and community
outreach. To celebrate
and advance this important work, 2014 has been designated as the "Year
