Young Man Slain Breaking Up A Fight | New Haven Independent
(Updated Wednesday 12:30 p.m.) A memorial fund has been set up in honor Satchel Ramos, the former Sound School student who was stabbed to death in Providence, R.I., early Sunday while trying to break up a fight.
New Haven government’s Livable City Initiative (LCI), where Satchel’s father Rafael works, has established the fund.
Just like his father, Rafael Ramos, Satchel Ramos has been actively involved and working with his father in the community and also Bregamos Community Theater and Big Turtle Summer Youth Camp. The intended use of donations is to create a memorial in Satchel’s honor at Bregamos Community Theater and to support the family throughout this difficult time,” reported LCI Executive Director Erik Johnson.
Donors should make out checks to “Friends of Stachel Ramos.” They can drop off donations at START Community Bank or contact Vivian Rodriguez (203-946-6437) at Pattie Lawlor (203-946-7802) at City Hall.
Satchel Ramos’s funeral is scheduled to take place Saturday at the Church of The Redeemer, 185 Cold Spring St. in New Haven, beginning at 2 p.m. It will be preceded by a viewing of the body from 12 to 1:30 p.m. A reception is scheduled for after the service, from 3 to 5 p.m., at the New Haven Museum at 114 Whitney Ave.
The death of Ramos, who was 22, sent shock waves through many circles in New Haven Monday. He was the son of Rafael Ramos, who for decades has helped families in trouble through his job with government’s Livable City Initiative (LCI); volunteered his time to take city kids on summer camping trips; and promoted the arts in Fair Haven and citywide through his not-for-profit organization, Bregamos Community Theater. He has helped many other families cope with the untimely deaths of loved ones. People who have come into contact with him through those various roles poured out their condolences and sympathy in phone calls and social media postings.
Satchel and his older brother Clyde came upon two men attacking a couple on the street as bars let out in the Federal Hill district around 2 a.m. Sunday, according to this report in the Providence Journal. They intervened to protect the couple. The attackers then slashed Clyde and stabbed Satchel to death. Police subsequently made an arrest. Clyde was treated at the hospital for his wounds, then released.
Satchel (pictured) attended Sound School for part of his high school years before moving out of town with family. (Click here for more on that in a Register story.)
Mayor Toni Harp released this statement:“No
family should have to bear the anguish the Ramos family must be feeling
– I join all New Haven residents in heartfelt sorrow for the tragic
loss of this young man, the son of a respected community leader. And
even as we grieve we must recommit to address the frequency of urban
violence in our country so this senseless waste of human potential is
stopped – in Providence, in New Haven, and in cities across the nation.”
