Rise + Rhyme: Storytelling/Performances for Ages 5 and Under featuring Marsha Goodman-Wood.
Marsha Goodman-Wood, a DC-based singer/songwriter and music teacher.
Marsha is known for getting kids singing and dancing at her shows,
setting little toes to tapping with original melodies that mix generous
doses of science and positive social messages into songs that are just
plain fun. Her quirky, smart compositions take on topics from astronomy
(answering the age-old question "Why Can't You Dance on Jupiter?") to
nonconformity ("Sheep Don't Wear Shoes") to biology ("The Penguin
Song"). A former cognitive neuroscientist, Marsha includes fun facts and
lessons in her songs! With tunes and stories that please children and
grownups alike, Marsha takes inspiration for her lyrics straight from
the creative kids she's raising and teaching. Rise + Rhyme is a weekly
morning storytelling and performance series for children ages 5 and
under, stay-at-home parents, and early rising families of all kinds.

Wednesday Night Open Mic Poetry hosted by Dwayne L Brown aka the "Crochet Kingpin."
A Busboys and Poetry event! For two hours, audiences can expect a
diverse chorus of voices and a vast array of professional spoken word
performers, open mic rookies, musicians and a different host every week.
Dwayne is a homegrown DC native poet, activist, break-dancer, and
fashion designer. Dwayne has been known to write a pretty good haiku in
his day which has lead to him win the Best Haiku Award at the 2011

recognition from the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, BBCAmerica,
the Discovery Channel, and the Washington Post. Ultimately his goal is
to make the audience feel something, and he's always met his goal! When
not documenting his life through poetic meter, he can be found on the

Film screening of "I'm Single Because..." and panel discussion with hosts Brian "Goldie" Turner & Ochieng "O" Asugo.
The film examines the disconnect between African American men and
women. The documentary captures thought provoking concepts on how to
approach relationships for the 21st century. It surveys a group of young
people opinions, stories and challenges with being single. Relationship
experts and grassroots activists put the conversation in context and
advocate different paths towards change, while collectively expounding
the underlying factors that contribute to the quandary. Janks Morton
asserts an old school mentality by dissecting the effects of media,
belief systems and other factors concerning the black community and its
profound effects on relationships while Leandra Ollie for the Talented
Tenth offers a mother-like nurturing tune by expressing her interactions
with the men in her life and breaking down the family dynamic structure
from the '50s and contrasting the same today. Overall I'm Single
Because is a thought provoking heart felt film that aspires to reach the
masses of young African America adults who might be single in the 21st
century.
