This
post is based on the discussions at "Afrophobia in the EU" a
Greens/European Free Alliance hearing that took place Thursday at the
European parliament in Brussels

Black Europeans in various
countries may face atrocities such as being taunted with “monkey chants”
as they walk down the street, attending parties where people dress in a
“slave theme” and enact being sold, or seeing advertisements where
marketers exploit the color of their skin, portraying them as exotic or
animal-like, in order to sell their products. Afro-phobia is an extreme
form of racism rooted in European colonization that leads to people of
African descent being treated in dehumanizing ways such as these.

These
acts of contempt, humiliation, hostility and dehumanization are caused
by a psychological, irrational fear people have of Africans and African
descendantsThe conference was a collaboration effort by EFA, the
European Network Against Racism (ENAR) and the European Coalition of
Cities against Racism (ECCAR) which gathered experts such as Members of
the European Parliament (MEPs), EU officials, civil society
organizations, artists and academics to discuss the issue of
Afro-phobia. The purpose of the discussion panel was not only to raise
awareness about how people of African descent and black Europeans are
affected by racial discrimination and stereotypes, but also to emphasize
urgency to recognize and politically address this specific form of
racism to make a powerful, positive difference in the lives of millions
of people of African descent living in the EU.
