A Message from Criminal Justice Caucus and The Justice Initiative at Columbia University:
Please pardon the mulitple emails but we wanted to let you know about a great event happening after the conference this Sunday March 9th from 2-5 pm that has been organized by our colleagues.  More information is below and we hope that some of you may attend.
Words to NYC: A Community Discussion about Punishment, Resistance and the City we Want
Sunday March 9th, 2014  2-5pmColumbia University School of Social Work Rm C031255 Amsterdam Avenue (122nd and Amsterdam)
On Sunday, March 9th, following the Beyond the Bars conference there a community discussion inviting community organizers, advocates, students, teachers, workers, and parents -to come together for a conversation about the ways in which punishment plays out in our city and collectively look toward alternatives that allow for healing and community empowerment.

This community discussion aims to help us understand, by drawing upon our collective knowledge and experience, the current landscape of punitive policies and practices in New York City, highlight current efforts of resistance, and explore and imagine the New York we want to live in. We hope this discussion will allow us to connect the bridges between different work being done across the city to build healthy communities and construct a counter narrative of a city that allows for healing and community empowerment, rather than punishment.
