January 2014 by Jan Spiller

The Sun is in Capricorn during the first part of the month and then moves into Aquarius for a month-long stay on the 19th. During the time when the Sun is in Capricorn, we will be charged with a willingness to take responsibility for creating our own success. We will have access to mature and sensible attitudes that can bring forces together harmoniously to create good results for all. We’ll also have an urge to put aside petty consideration. In our personal lives, we’ll have clarity concerning our purposes and goals.
During the time when the Sun is in Aquarius, the atmospheric energy expands, generating an awareness of the importance of being generous with people outside our own personal sphere. What arises will be a mature readiness to create win-win situations for everyone.
Venus retrograde in Capricorn since December 21 and continuing until January 31, opposes Jupiter in Cancer, also retrograde. As a result, family issues are likely to arise throughout the month. This can concern our immediate family or what we might consider an extended family. Situations will arise that cause us to examine ways for experiencing emotional intimacy with others that are congruent with our sense of being in control. During this cycle, take time to reevaluate your relationships to see whether both of these needs are being satisfied or whether you need to bring them into better balance. In interacting with family members, it is important to remember that stubbornness is not going to put us on the path to victory, at least not during this period. Your best bet is to let others talk about what is important to them. This is a great time to achieve closeness and to express caring with those to whom you feel close. Use this opportunity by showing your interest in others and their goals. Once aware, you can convey to them your spirit of goodwill by speaking words of support and encouragement. This will allow you to create greater intimacy while, at the same time, maintaining you autonomy.
January has some good news and some difficult news. The good news is that a New Moon occurs on New Year’s Day. Consequently, 2014 will be a year for new beginnings, especially in the Capricorn areas of materializing success and achieving goals that have long been close to your heart. Because the start of the new year coincides with a New Moon, New Year’s resolutions are more likely to manifest than in other years.
The difficult news, however, is that 2014 also begins on a rather intense note. The Sun, Mercury, and Pluto in Capricorn oppose Jupiter in Cancer, with all four of these placements in square aspect to the opposition of Mars in Libra to Uranus in Aries. This intense Grand Square—involving six of the ten traditional horoscope placements, all in cardinal signs—supplies a potent energetic impetus to take action.
We will all be feeling a tremendous sense of power and control, even superiority. We may feel like we can take on the world. This urge for dominance, however, is . . . . .
