Yale-New Haven Hospital offers free prostate cancer screening
Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven, in conjunction with the Yale Cancer Center and the Department of Urology is offering a free prostate cancer screening consisting of prostate examination and PSA blood test (to assess risk of prostate cancer) on Thursday, Dec. 5 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

The event is being held at the McGivney Center for Cancer Care at the YNHH Saint Raphael Campus, 659 George St., New Haven.

The screening is intended for men age 55 and over (especially those between 55 and 69), men age 40 and over with a family history of prostate cancer in a first degree relative (a father or brother) and African-American men age 40 and over.

“Screenings are essential for the early detection of potentially clinically significant prostate cancers,” said Charles Walker, MD, an attending urologist at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven and Assistant Professor of Urology at the Yale School of Medicine. “In keeping with recommendations of the American Urological Association, we believe that all men between the ages of 55 and 69 should be offered screening.  Those who are at the highest risk for the disease – African Americans and those with a family history of prostate cancer -- should begin even earlier, at age 40.  Our hope is that the screening event will reach the men in the community who are at the highest risk and will provide a forum to educate men about the factors they can control to reduce risk such as diet and exercise.”

While free, the screening is available by appointment only. Call 1-888-700-6543 or select an appointment time online at www.ynhh.org/events and scroll down to December 5.
