Sen. Blumenthal backs New Haven’s Harp in mayoral race
The last of the city’s Washington delegation is officially backing Toni Harp as the city’s next mayor.
U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal said he will be in the city on Wednesday to announce his support for the longtime state senator to replace outgoing Mayor John DeStefano Jr.
His colleague in the Senate, Chris Murphy, was the first to get behind Harp, announcing his backing as she fought it out with three opponents leading up to her win in the Democratic primary on Sept. 10.
Next up, as Harp wrapped up endorsements across the Democratic political establishment, including Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, was an endorsement by U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro.“I feel very strongly that Toni will bring experience, credibility and commitment to the job of mayor for the city of New Haven,” Blumenthal said.
He said he worked closely with her during his tenure as state attorney general in Connecticut.
Blumenthal said Harp was committed to economic justice, improving public safety and healthcare and is in a position to advance New Haven to a new level of success.
