A public forum hosted by the Connecticut Commission on Children, the state Achievement Gap Task Force, and the Black & Puerto Rican Caucus of the General Assembly

Studies have revealed that minority children in Connecticut enter the juvenile justice system at a higher rate than their white peers and are treated more harshly there. Moreover, these differences don’t stem from how kids behave, but from the decisions adults make. To help communities delve into this issue and develop solutions, the Connecticut Juvenile Justice Alliance (CJJA) and Connecticut Public Television (CPTV) have partnered to hold forums around the state. The first of these forums was hosted by the Commission on Children, as part of its September 17, 2013 meeting.The forum began with a presentation by CJJA Deputy Director Lara Herscovitch and included viewing parts of a the CPTV documentary “The Color of Justice,” which examines the role race plays in Connecticut’s juvenile justice system.
