Steve McQueen visited the Gilder Lehrman Collection to research this hard-hitting, epic film. Our Curator Sandy Trenholm and Collections Specialist Tom Mullusky showed McQueen plantation journals, a catalog from a slave auction, and letters from slave owners to help highlight both slaves and slave owners as individuals.
With the film now in theaters, we encourage you to view this film and reflect on the story of our nation and the great struggles in democracy and equality we have overcome.
