WHAT IF- A POST ELECTION COMMENTARY WRITTEN BEFORE THE VOTES ARE TALLIED ?

A friend just sent me an email mentioning that they looked forward to reading my commentary about today's results from the New Haven "Democratic" Primary Election.

By the way the reason I have put quotes around the word Democratic is because three of candidates are running as Independents in the November general election should they lose today which still baffles me.

Tomorrow's election results are already written.  The outcome is a prime function of multiple, historic, divided, mis-calculated and new math  what if driven strategies.

What if Mayor Daniels had not challenged the town committee's endorsement of the young John Desfano in 1989.

What if Mayor Daniels had not been unable to create a community consensus supporting his administration during the second term?

What if John Destefano had become governor?

What if John Destefano had run for another term?

What if John Destefano had waited until the spring to announce that he was not running?(Announcing so early in the year that he was not running still seems really strange to me)

Who else would have emerged from the woodwork in addition to Gary Holder Winfield and Justin Eliker to challenge the current Mayor?

What if the Mayor had been placed in a position to have had to defend his historic record as mayor for two decades.

What if Toni Harp had not entered the race?

What if Jack Keyes had entered the race?

What if Matthew Nemerson had stayed in the race at least until the primary?

What if Gary Holder Winfield had at least stayed in the race until the primary?

You get the idea, who ever wins the primary and the general election in November is the
beneficiary of  historic twists, turns, mysteries and intrique (yes you can all it back room dealing if you wish).

But at the inauguration in January recognize that all cards are on the table once again and if you want to play in the game, you have to be in it.
