William Popik, a “serious amateur”
photographer from Hartford, Conn., snapped this mysteriously alluring
portrait of a young woman from the Himba tribe of Namibia while on a
picture-taking trip in July. The beautiful color of her skin is caused
by rubbing a mixture of ochre and butter into it — a custom followed by
all of the women of this tribe.
