Hi Readers!

We hope this message finds you well. As many of you, tomorrow will mark the 50thAnniversary of a pivotal event in our history—The March on Washington. To commemorate this seminal moment, The Root is taking it to the tweets by hosting the first-ever March on Twitter.” The “#MarchOn Twitter” is a digital forum commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington with a day-long discussion of modern-day civil rights issues.

The day will begin on Wednesday, August 28th at 10am EST and conclude at 4pm EST. The sessions will feature experts, activists, and celebrities leading conversations on critical issues, including criminal justice, education and immigration, in a series of hour-long segments leading up to President Obama’s speech at the Lincoln Memorial. Utilizing Twitter as a platform, virtual civil rights marchers worldwide will participate with the hashtag #MarchON.

The program line-up for the event is as follows:
  • 10:00 AM EST - Voting Rights: Responding to Setbacks and Attacks
  • 11:00 AM EST - Criminal Injustice: Fighting Racial profiling, Stop and Frisk, & the School-to-Prison Pipeline
  • 12:00 PM EST -  Immigration Reform: What’s at Stake and Who’s Taking Action
  • 1: 00 EST - LGBTQ Rights: Why They Matter to Communities of Color
  • 2:00 PM EST- “Let Freedom Ring” Commemorative Closing Ceremony Coverage

The event is designed to facilitate informative discussions, debate and calls-to-action related to key issues using 21st century tools. This first of its kind event will advance the civil rights conversation and social justice agenda that Martin Luther King Jr. and others helped to push to the forefront of American society 50 years ago.

Those interested can participate in the event by using the hashtag #MarchOn or via The Root's official Twitter account, @TheRoot247.
