Toni Harp finishes budget, picks up more endorsements
June 11, 2013
Last Wednesday night the Connecticut state budget was finalized by the
legislature. As Chair of the Appropriations Committee, Toni Harp was key
to the budget process, and this year she successfully pushed for a
progressive budget that saved New Haven millions of dollars. The city
initially expected to lose $6 million this year, but Toni’s negotiations
kept the state from making any cuts, according to the New Haven Independent.
In fact, Mayor John DeStefano personally thanked the New Haven
delegation of state legislators for their work on the budget: “The
budget ended up in a much better place than where it started. That’s
real and a big deal for families in New Haven.” The budget proves that
Toni is an effective negotiator, in addition to being the good person we
always knew she was.
I’ll let Toni explain in her own words why you should care about the budget.
"The new, two-year budget protects the state’s key investments in economic development, public education, and social services, and
it restores funding for two notable features that are particularly
important in New Haven: school-based health centers and vitally
important after-school programs. I’m pleased about having
overcome so many obstacles in preparing and negotiating this budget,
first and foremost eliminating a projected deficit of nearly $1.9
billion over the two years without raising the income tax or the sales
tax."
In addition, the new budget preserves municipal aid programs, which
will bolster New Haven’s finances over the next two years. This will
help the next administration – the Harp Administration – balance the
city’s budget and avoid raising taxes.

Speaking of the next administration, we’re
happy to report that Toni’s campaign is gaining momentum every day. This
week, Toni’s campaign is set to gather endorsements from New Haven’s
Latino community. We don't want to spoil the surprise, but these
endorsements will be on the order of last week's 18 Alderman. The
endorsers will include State Representative Juan Candelaria, more
members of the Board of Aldermen, town committee members, former
Aldermen, and community and religious leaders.
Latinos for Harp will be announcing the new endorsements at 5 pm,
Wednesday, at the Fair Haven Elderly Apartments (25 Saltonstall Ave).
These endorsements show that Toni’s appeal is not limited to any one
neighborhood, one class, or one ethnic group. Aldermen have endorsed
Toni from literally one end of the city to the other, from Westville to
the East Shore and from the Hill to Fair Haven. Other candidates have
claimed that they have support from a broad spectrum of New Haven
residents, but only Toni has proven she has that support with her
endorsements. After this week, 20 out of the 30 Aldermen currently
sitting on the Board will have endorsed Toni. These Aldermen know the
communities they represent better than anyone else does and will be
invaluable in organizing grassroots support for Toni.

On Monday the New Haven Register published a front page article
describing Toni as “one of the lead candidates in the crowded mayoral
field.” In the article, Toni went into detail about her plans for New
Haven, including hiring more police officers, early childhood education,
and a citywide jobs agenda.
The Register’s article noted that Toni is “very knowledgeable and
intelligent. She has a lot of compassion for the people she cares for.
She would bring the same skill set to whatever job she does.” That’s not
from Toni’s PR team or a supportive alderman. The speaker is Republican
State Senator John McKinney, the Senate minority leader. Along with the
successful budget, this statement demonstrates that Toni is a leader
who works across the aisle and has strong connections to Hartford that
will be valuable for the city in the future.
