WHAT:           The New Haven chapter of the Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, the oldest African American Greek letter social fraternity founded in 1904, held its  annual scholarship ceremony on Saturday May 18, 2013.The chapter is known as the Beta Tau Boulé and was inspired by Edward A. Bouchet, the first African American to graduate from Yale College as well as to earn a doctorate from an American University. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from Yale in 1876.
$30,000 was awarded to 5 students; scholarships are made possible through the Promising Scholars Fund at The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven.
