Rabb-COMMUNITY BUILDING

  • Name : Chris
  • Rabb
  • City : Philadelphia
  • What is the project and what are you trying to accomplish?: As part of a larger project to build sustainable, place-based social enterprises in low-wealth communities in and beyond Philadelphia, I am seeking to launch a series of workshops and webinars that teach entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial skills in the context of community-building for and by African American men and boys.

Black men are 50% more likely to start businesses than their White male counterparts. Yet, they are under-represented by at least 50% in the actual business population. This means that while they have the passion and vision to pursue new ventures, they do not have the necessary mix of resources and opportunities to do so successfully.

This project will give them the tools and the context in which to thoughtfully and strategically pursue entrepreneurship in ways that promote shared prosperity.
  • Who will benefit from this project and how will the project engage others in the community? This project is specifically geared to BMe participants and stakeholders as well as other individuals and groups whose missions complement BMe as it relates to building entrepreneurial literacy, capacity and impact.

The workshops and webinars will teach Black men and youth the importance of business in the service of social justice and facilitate brainstorming to cultivate ideas that can sprout into business models upon which actual enterprises can be created to flourish for the benefit of not just the founders, but for broad communal impact.
  • How does the project involve other people and organizations to achieve its goals? Please describe any partnerships: This project has the support of the African American Museum of Philadelphia as the initial host partner. Other potential host partners will include the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Institute at Temple University Fox School of Business and the SEED Center at Philadelphia University.

In addition to providing use of state-of-the-art facilities, other programmatic opportunities may be fostered as well that benefit Black men and others.
  • What is your estimated budget for completing this project? How will you use BMe funding? Your best guess is acceptable : I am seeking funding of $20,000 to develop workshop materials for participants to use during these sessions as well as for the implementation, promotion of these workshops over a 6-month time frame upon completion of this latest iPad-powered version of the workshop based on the book, Invisible Capital: How Unseen Forces Shape Entrepreneurial Opportunity (2010).
