RECEIVE THE 2013 NAACP IMAGE AWARD
NEW YORK – February 4, 2013 – BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Inc., a leading non-profit organization in
youth development, research and media wins the the NAACP Image Award in the Outstanding Variety
Series category for the 2012 BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Awards on BET. BLACK GIRLS ROCK! was up
against extraordinary programming in this category including Oprah and the Legendary Cast of the
Roots - 35 Years Later (OWN), Oprah’s Master Class (OWN), the First Graduating Class: Oprah
Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (OWN), and Verses & Flow (TV ONE).
The BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Award show is dedicated to recognizing the achievements of remarkable
women of color from diverse professional backgrounds and also highlights the extraordinary work of
young community advocates. Founder and executive producer, Beverly Bond states, “I launched the
BLACK GIRLS ROCK! award show in 2006 because I realized that our sheroes needed a platform
where their contributions could be illuminated and our girls needed to be inspired to reach their
highest potential.”
Hosted by the talented, hilarious, and dynamic Tracee Elis Ross and Regina King, the 2012 BLACK
GIRLS ROCK! Award show celebrated exceptional honorees including: singer, songwriter, and Cover
Girl Janelle Monae – Young, Gifted, and Black Award; actress and activist Kerry Washington – Star
Power Award; GRAMMY Award-winning music legend Dionne Warwick—Living Legend Award;
magazine editor, writer, and journalist Susan Taylor—Inspiration Award; singer-songwriter Alicia Keys
—Rock Star Award; and human rights activists and medical doctors Dr. Hawa Abdi and her daughters
—Social Humanitarian Awardees.

On winning this year’s NAACP Image Award, Beverly Bond said “This is truly an incredible honor –
not because it’s a wonderful accolade for my team and I, but because this recognition demonstrates
that our media environment is slowly starting to shift. There are now mainstream media platforms
where women and girls can be honored, uplifted, and empowered. And these positive messages
