In a bold move to expand its U.S. presence, Middle Eastern news org Al Jazeera has acquired cabler Current TV in a deal valued at about $500 million.
Deal with Doha, Qatar-based Al Jazeera was unveiled Wednesday by Current TV chiefs Al Gore and Joel Hyatt, who put the news and public affairs-centric cabler on the block in October. Al Jazeera reportedly intends to quickly rebrand the channel as Al Jazeera America.
