NEW HAVEN VOTES COALITION TO HOST PANEL TONIGHT ON CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

WHO: Mayor John DeStefano Jr., Secretary of the State Denise Merrill
, Amos Smith of Community Action Agency, Orlando Rodriguez of
Connecticut Voices for Children, Mongi Dhaouadi of the Council of
American-Islamic Relations, Lee Cruz of the Community Foundation for
Greater New Haven and Angel Fernandez Chavero of CONNECT, Veronica
Douglas-Givan on the New Haven Public Schools.
 
WHAT: The New Haven Votes Coalition is sponsoring a forum tonight on
the 2011 Connecticut Civic Health Index. The Index, released by the
Secretary of State's Office, highlights voter engagement and reveals
disparities in voter participation across different segments of the
state's population. The panel will consider the causes of these
disparities and how to overcome barriers to voting and civic engagement
in all communities. Mayor John DeStefano Jr. will give opening remarks.
Participants include Amos Smith of Community Action Agency, Orlando
Rodriguez of Connecticut Voices for Children, Mongi Dhaouadi of the
Council of American-Islamic Relations, Lee Cruz of the Community
Foundation for Greater New Haven and Angel Fernandez Chavero of CONNECT.
The panel will be moderated by Veronica Douglas-Givan on the New Haven
Public Schools. Secretary of the State Denise Merrill will also give
welcoming remarks.
