CHICK COREA AND GARY BURTON WITH HARLEM STRING QUARTET
Fine Arts Center Concert Hall, Chamber Seating - University of Massachusetts Amherst
The FAC presents the remarkable partnership between two of jazz’s longest-standing musical pioneers:
Chick Corea and Gary Burton, performing material from their new album Hot House, recently released on September 4. They’ll offer their unique stew of “standards”: pieces by composers from Kurt Weill and Antônio Carlos Jobim to Thelonious Monk and Lennon & McCartney. The celebrated duo also adds the Harlem String Quartet, expanding their legendary chamber-jazz repertoire with Chick’s composition “Mozart Goes Dancing” and classic Chick & Gary tunes. The concert’s ticket price includes a $15 donation to support tickets for kids as part of the FAC’s Global Performances program for K-12 student performances. And ticket holders will also enjoy a pre- and post-show party on the plaza with appetizers, live entertainment, and a cash bar. The tent opens at 6:30p.m. The public is invited to a free listening party on Monday, October 1, at 7 p.m., at Esselon Café in Hadley where New England Public Radio’s Jazz à la Mode host Tom Reney will discuss Corea’s and Burton’s classic recording,Crystal Silence, and their subsequent collaborations. He’ll also touch on earlier piano and vibraphone recordings by Lionel Hampton, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, and Eddie Costa. Then, on Monday, October 8 at 7 p.m. in the Amherst Cinema, New England Public Radio presents the first installment of its Jazz à la Mode Film Series with the poignant documentary on the life of jazz trumpeter and vocalist Chet Baker,Let’s Get Lost, a fascinating series of interviews with friends, family, associates and lovers, interspersed with film from Baker's earlier life and some of his final performances. The film will be augmented with live music by UMass jazz quartet Free-for-All and commentary by NEPR Jazz à la Mode host Tom Reney. Tickets for the showing are available online at www.amherstcinema.org or at the Amherst Cinema box office. The film, discussion, and entertainment is presented in collaboration with New England Public Radio and the Amherst Cinema. The evening’s music is sponsored by the Davis Financial Group. An NEA Jazz Master, 18-time Grammy winner, prolific composer and undisputed keyboard virtuoso, Chick Corea has attained living legend status after four decades of unparalleled creativity and an artistic output that is simply staggering. From straight ahead to avant-garde, bebop to fusion, children’s songs to chamber music, along with some far-reaching forays into symphonic works, Since embarking on a solo career in 1966, Chick has been at the forefront of jazz, both as a renowned pianist forging new ground with his acoustic jazz bands and as an innovative electric keyboardist with Return to Forever and the Elektric Band. Self-taught on vibes, Gary Burton developed a remarkable four-mallet technique that brought the vibes into a new era following the swinging contributions of such two-mallet pioneers as Lionel Hampton, Red Norvo, and Milt Jackson. Burton broke in with country guitarist Hank Garland when he was 17, appearing alongside drummer Joe Morello and bassist Joe Benjamin on Garland’s groundbreaking 1961 RCA recordingJazz Winds from a New Direction. He toured with pianist George Shearing’s quintet in 1963 and later gained notoriety with tenor saxophonist Stan Getz’s piano-less quartet from 1964 to 1966 (appearing on 1964′s bossa nova outings Getz Au Go Go with Astrud Gilberto and Getz/Gilberto #2). Speaking of his longstanding collaboration with Burton, Corea told Digital Interviews in 1999, “Me and Gary continue to just play. It’s always been, ‘Oh, let’s do another gig.’ There never was a point where … we reformed. It’s always been a sideline with us, in the sense that we’ve always had main groups that we do, and then we’ve always gotten together with the duet. It’s kind of worked out very, very nicely. It’s a special little place that’s all its own.” Burton wrote about the longstanding duet on his web site: “No one understands the idiosyncrasies of my improvising the way Chick does. We discovered an immediate connection, like two people who speak the same obscure language. It could be because we both play keyboard instruments, or because we both came of age musically in Boston with many of the same local musicians as mentors. Whatever the reason, we discovered from the beginning that we could anticipate each other’s ideas with surprising accuracy, and our duet repertoire has been an essential pillar in our careers.” For their FAC performance, the duo spices its revered melodious adventures by bringing in the Harlem String Quartet, expanding their legendary chamber-jazz repertoire on “Mozart Goes Dancing” and other tunes. The Harlem String Quartet, praised for its “panache” by The New York Times, is currently the resident ensemble in the New England Conservatory of Music’s Professional String Quartet Program. Its mission is to advance diversity in classical music while engaging young and new audiences through the discovery and presentation of varied repertoire, highlighting works by minority composers. Tickets for the Hot House Tour are $55, $50, and $25; Five College, GCC, STCC students and youth 17 and under are $15. The ticket price includes a $15 donation to support tickets for kids as part of the FAC’s Global Performances program for K-12 student performances. For tickets call the Box Office at 545-2511, toll-free at 800-999-UMAS, or purchase online atfineartscenter.com.

BURNT SUGAR does STEELY DAN
Real Art Ways - 56 Arbor Street – Hartford
Famed eclectic musical ensemble Burnt Sugar is bringing its unique mix of jazz, rock, funk and African sounds back to Real Art Ways, this time reimagining the classic songs of 1970s American rock band Steely Dan. Vernon Reid, founder of the rock band Living Colour, will conduct two sets, beginning at 8PM. Burnt Sugar, a 17-piece ensemble with an ever-rotating lineup of musicians, is the creation of writer/guitarist/producer Greg Tate and bassist Jared Michael Nickerson. The group presents a lyrical, seductive, and exploratory fusion of the foundations that tie together the music of today to the music of yesterday. Founder Greg Tate says of the collective: "Burnt Sugar got the nerve to claim Sly Stone, Morton Feldman, Billie Holiday, Jimi Hendrix and Jean Luc Ponty as progenitors. Our player-ranks include known Irish fiddlers, AACM refugees, Afro-punk rejects, unrepentant beboppers, feminist rappers, jitterbugging doowoppers, frankly loud funk-a-teers and rodeo stars of the digital divide." "Vernon Reid conduct[ed] the Burnt Sugar Arkestra through a suite of Steely Dan classics imagined with more soul than Fagan & Becker's records. The songs are so inventive they keep their flavor even when stretched...they found the funky soul in its DNA and mined it like a gold mine." - Nelson George

MARK FELDMAN/SYLVIE COURVOISIER DUO
Bezanson Recital Hall – University of Massachusetts – Amherst, MA
“Calling these duets simply chamber music, would be selling them short,” writes Andrew Bartlett. “The music gallops through genres, all of which is touched uniquely by Feldman and Courvoisier's mix of sharp jazz chops, 20th-century chamber music, and traditional music of multiple stripes.” Found on over 150 recordings, violinist Mark Feldman has worked with everybody from Johnny Cash and John Zorn, to the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. He has performed and recorded with Kenny Wheeler, Paul Bley, Billy Hart, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano, Anthony Davis, Dave Douglas, Muhal Richard Abrams, Tim Berne, Mark Dresser and Uri Caine among others. Before moving to New York City in 1986, Mr. Feldman lived in Nashville, Tennessee where he toured with country western singers Loretta Lynn and Ray Price. In Nashville he appeared on recordings by Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, George Jones, Jerry Lee Lewis and TV evangelist Jimmy Swaggart. Composer John Zorn has included Feldman in many concert and recording projects, and he has been commissioned to write for and perform with the Kronos Quartet and the WDR Radio Orchestra. He has appeared on record with Cheryl Crow, The Manhattan Transfer, Diana Ross and Carol King. His wife, pianist and composer Sylvie Courvoisier, has recorded for ECM ,Tzadik and Intakt records, and has worked with Yusef Lateef, Joëlle Léandre, Herb Robertson, Butch Morris, Ellery Eskelin, Tony Oxley, and Tim Berne, among others. She was awarded Switzerland's Grand Prix de la Fondation Vaudoise de la Culture in 2010. With Ikue Mori and Susie Ibarra she is a member of the trio Mephista, and co-leads a quartet with Feldman that includes Thomas Morgan and Gerry Hemmingway. “That her music is as aesthetically beautiful as it is strange and mysterious is only further testament to her prowess as a composer,” writes Thom Jurek about her 2004 release, Abaton (ECM), featuring Feldman and Erik Friedlander. “That this trio plays her music as if it has been creating it from the air is nothing short of remarkable. Abaton is Courvoisier’s crowning achievement thus far, and this group points her firmly forward in a direction where everything is still possible, demonstrating that there is something new under the sun in classical music and improvisation.” Tickets are available through the FAC box office, 545-2511 or 1-800-999-UMAS. PIANIST ANGELICA SANCHEZ AND GUITARIST OMAR TAMEZ
United Congregational Church - 300 Appleton St. - Holyoke
“This is, simply, one of the most beautiful solo piano CDs issued in recent memory,” writes Jim Macnie about Sanchez’ 2010 release, A Little House (Clean Feed).  Since moving East from her native Phoenix in 1994, Sanchez  has ensconced herself in the highest circles of the New York’s jazz scene. She is a member of Wadada Leo Smith’s Golden Quartet and his big band, Organic, Chad Taylor’s Circle Down with Chris Lightcap, Harris Eisenstadt’s September Trio with Ellery Eskelin, and Kevin Norton’s Bauhaus Quintet. She has worked with Paul Motian, Ralph Alessi, Susie Ibarra, Tim Berne, Mario Pavone, Trevor Dunn, Mark Dresser and many more.  “Every piece is like a story told to you privately,” Carla Bley writes in the liner notes to A Little House. “There are surprises, interesting structures and references, elegant, inventive language and astonishingly original content. Even the completely improvised pieces seem to have a plot.” Sanchez leads her own quintet featuring Marc Ducret, Tony Malaby, Drew Gress, and Tom Rainey.  Omar Tamez is one of the premier guitar players of Mexico. Combining jazz and folk music from Mexico, Tamez has performed internationally throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia. For more than 15 years, Tamez has been leading the group Non-Jazz, and is the founder, producer and artistic director of the “International Musicians Meeting”, an annual festival in his native Monterrey.  Tamez studied classical music with his father, composer Nicandro Tamez and attended IRCAM in Paris. His recent Albany Records release, Voces Internas,  features classical music by Mexican composers Leandro Espinosa, Mario Lavista and Manuel de Elias. Tamez has played and recorded with Gebhard Ullmann, Reggie Workman, Rashied Ali, Sonny Fortune, Andrew Cyrille and Lisa Sokolov.  Based on the farm share model where stakeholders ensure the success of the farm by pre-paying for food, Pioneer Valley Jazz Share members purchase jazz shares to provide the capital needed to produce concerts with minimal institutional support. Opening Group: a high school student ensemble
There will be a student workshop with the musicians from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.
Polish National Home - 60 Charter Oak Ave - Hartford
Composer, saxophonist, and poet, Oliver Lake is co-founder of the renowned World Saxophone Quartet. A Guggenheim fellow for composition, Oliver was the first African American commissioned by the Library of Congress and McKim Foundation for composition. His Orchestra piece, "Cross Stitch" premiered in the spring of 94 performed by the Wheeling Symphony. His piece for violin and piano, "Movement Turns and Switches", premiered inn the fall of1993 at the Academy of Arts and Sciences in Washington DC. Receiver of numerous composition commissions from the N.E.A. and Meet the Composer of New York, Oliver's' compositions are included in the Smithsonian collection. Various artists have performed his works, including the Arditti String Quartet, World Saxophone Quartet, Amherst Sax Quartet, Regina Carter, Brooklyn Philharmonic, the Wheeling Symphony, San Francisco Contemporary Players, New York Music Ensemble, and the Pulse Percussion Ensemble of New York. Oliver has performed throughout the world including Japan, Australia and Europe with the World Saxophone Quartet and/or Trio 3. He has performed and arranged for such diverse artists as pop singer Bjork, rocker Lou Reed, jazz vocalist Abbey Lincoln and rap group, Tribe Called Quest. Oliver's music was nurtured early on by the Black Artist Group of St. Louis, of which he was a founding member. His music is a mature and masterful integration of seemingly disparate elements. His work is a combination of improvisation and composition with jumps and leaps of structure, rhythm, melodic and harmonic invention that have become his signature. Oliver currently, performs, composes and tours with his Organ Quartet, Steel Quartet, Big Band, the World Saxophone Quartet and Trio 3. Exploring new territory on the Hammond B3 organ, the Organ Quartet features Oliver along with Jared Gold on organ, Freddie Hendrix on trumpet and drummer Chris Beck. “The music is grounded in the music of the early to middle 1960's, with Lake's tart and vinegary alto recalling Eric Dolphy, and Gold's organ reminiscent of Larry Young. But this is far from a nostalgia exercise, the musicians use the past as a jumping off point and make the music their own in a very exciting and constantly compelling album.” - Tim Niland

DITHER - ELECTRIC GUITAR QUARTET
Crowell Concert Hall – Wesleyan University - Middletown
Pre-performance talk by Wesleyan Assistant Professor of Music Paula Matthusen at 7:15 pm
"The electric guitar quartet Dither, typifying this nebulous twenty-first century, brings massive chops with an egalitarian sense of purpose to every piece of music." --Free Music Archive. Dither, an electric guitar quartet formed in 2007 by Taylor Levine, David Linaburg, Joshua Lopes, and James Moore, is dedicated to an eclectic mix of experimental repertoire which spans from new commissions and original compositions to improvisation, electronic manipulation, and multimedia works. With sounds ranging from clean pop textures to heavily processed noise, from tight rhythmic unity to cacophonous sound mass, Dither's music wholeheartedly embraces the beautiful, engulfing, and often gloriously loud sound of electric guitars. A Crowell Concert Series event presented by the Music Department and the Center for the Arts.

MARY HALVORSON/JESSICA PAVONE DUO
Bezanson Recital Hall – University of Massachusetts – Amherst, MA
Guitarist Mary Halvorson and violist Jessica Pavone have a long-standing duo, now in its 11th year as a collaborative endeavor. They make music that embraces a wide range of musical traditions to create what Time Out New York describes as, "a challenging fusion of oblique art song, reflective chamber music and thorny free improv."  Halvorson and Pavone have worked together in a variety of musical settings over the past decade, most notably the collective quartet The Thirteenth Assembly (with Taylor Ho Bynum and Tomas Fujiwara) and the ensembles of the iconic saxophonist/composer Anthony Braxton. Unlike those larger groups, their duo boils down its diverse influences into intimate original compositions that skillfully blend ethereal vocals and folk-inspired simplicity with an experimental edge, expanding their appeal beyond the boundaries of avant-garde jazz. “Their level of interplay borders on the clairvoyant", writes Troy Collins.  The Duo has released four recordings to date: Prairies (Lucky Kitchen, 2005), On and Off (Skirl Records, 2007), Thin Air (Thirsty Ear Records, 2009) and Departure of Reason (Thirsty Ear Records, 2011). "The music challenges what is comfortable, with enough restraint to beckon the imagination, sometimes lifting and carrying along, sometimes dragging us toward what we cannot see," writes the Montreal Mirror.  Guitarist/composer Mary Halvorson has been active in New York since 2002, following jazz studies at Wesleyan University and the New School. NPR called her “the most forward-thinking guitarist working right now.” Francis Davis called her “one of today’s most formidable bandleaders.” In addition to her longstanding trio, featuring John Hébert and Ches Smith, and her quintet, which adds Jonathan Finlayson and Jon Irabagon, Halvorson is a member of bands led by Tim Berne, Tomas Fujiwara, Ingrid Laubrock, Myra Melford, Marc Ribot and Tom Rainey, among others.  String instrumentalist, Jessica Pavone leads the bands Army of Strangers and The Pavones, and has performed in ensembles led by Anthony Braxton, Jason Cady, Jeremiah Cymerman, Matana Roberts, Aaron Siegel, Henry Threadgill, and Matthew Welch.    As a composer, Pavone has earned grants and commissions from the Aaron Copland Recording Fund, the American Music Center, The Kitchen,  MATA, The Jerome Foundation, and the group, Till By Turning, which recently presented the European premiere of her piece "Quotidian" at Klangbad Festival in Germany. Her music has been released by the Tzadik, Thirsty Ear, Skirl and Porter record labels. Tickets are still only $10 and $5 (students), and are available through the FAC box office, 545-2511 or 1-800-999-UMAS.  See the entire season at www.fineartscenter.com/solosandduos.
