Anniversary Rally & Greeting Book, December 2. 2012
October 1, 2012
We are excited to announce the
recipients of this year's Amistad Awards which will be presented by
the People's World on Sunday, December 2, 2012 at 4 pm at a special "Connecticut Rising - We are all 'the 47%!' anniversary
rally and youth cultural program in New Haven at Cooperative Arts and
Humanities High School, 177 College Street.
Strengthened
by this year's intensive election organizing to get out the vote,
we come together in hope and unity to say NO to big money lies, bigotry
and fear and build the growing movement to bring our country out of
crisis, rebuild the American Dream and put people before profits.
We celebrate the contributions and
example of Senator Toni Harp, Kurt Westby and Fatima Rojas, three
wonderful leaders and role models who challenge economic inequality and
are in the forefront of organizing for jobs, health care, union rights
and the needs of youth.
Sen. Toni Harp has moved forward equality and social
progress through her courage and leadership in the state Senate as
champion for the needs of working and poor people, for the Freedom
Trail, and in principled support of funds for restoration of the
Peoples Center.
Kurt Westby
is Director of SEIU 32 BJ representing 4,500 office cleaners and food
service workers in Connecticut. His steadfast commitment to organize
and build leadership among low-wage workers has strengthened labor's
voice in politics and at the bargaining table.
Fatima Rojas, a Unite Here Local 217 organizer, is accepting on behalf of immigrants and all workers. Her passionate leadership for equal rights and social justice has inspired grass roots participation and won victories for better working conditions and stronger communities.
