Emancipation Proclamation party in New Haven to honor past, future (video)- The New Haven Register - Serving New Haven, Connecticut: "NEW HAVEN — The city is having a proclamation party, and the guest of honor is a 150-year-old document.

The anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Long Wharf pier, with speeches and tours of the schooner Amistad — itself a symbol of the enduring struggle for equality.

“Every generation has to be told the story of America, the story of how important and fragile our freedoms and liberties are, and that they didn’t just come to us overnight. They evolved,” said the Rev. Frederick Streets, acting pastor of the Dixwell Avenue Congregational United Church of Christ and former Yale University chaplain."
