In tribute to Malcolm X on the 87th anniversary of his birth and in remembrance of Trayvon Martin the Kiyama Movement is hosting our Third Annual Pledge Ceremony on Saturday, May 19th at James Hillhouse H.S. (in the auditorium) from 11:00 A.M. – 1:30 P.M.
Prior to the Pledge ceremony there will be a presentation on the Kiyama Circle of Success (KCS). This model focuses on the critical need for parents to become more involved and accountable for their child’s/children’s educational development. The model also addresses the importance of holding students accountable for their own educational advancement. Additionally, the KCS recognizes the need for the broader black community to become more self critical and self reflective as a means of building a stronger sense of community and ultimately challenging the apathy which defines the existing academic culture of our community.
Males over the age of 18 are encouraged to partake in the Pledge Ceremony. Thus far dozens of men in the community have taken the pledge for self and collective improvement. We hope members of the community will encourage their sons, husbands, fathers, uncles, etc. to join us in this endeavor. Family members may also attend the ceremony. Those who plan on taking the pledge are encouraged to wear a white shirt and dark pants. Suit and tie are optional.
The Kiyama Movement will also recognize select organizations from the community that have demonstrated a commitment to service in the community. Those organizations include: Oriental Masonic Lodge # 6; King Solomon Masonic Lodge #23; Widow Son Masonic Lodge #1; Epsilon Iota Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.; Delta Iota Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity; and Eta Alpha Lamda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
This event is FREE and open to the public. Refreshments will be served following the ceremony.
