***************************
In tribute to Malcolm X on the 87th anniversary of his birth and in remembrance of Trayvon Martin the Kiyama Movement  hosted the Third Annual Pledge Ceremony on Saturday, May 19th at James Hillhouse H.S. (in the auditorium) from 11:00 A.M. – 1:30 P.M.

Prior to the Pledge ceremony there was a content laden and insightful  presentation on the Kiyama Circle of Success (KCS).  This model focuses on the critical need for parents to become more involved and accountable for their child’s/children’s educational development. The model also addresses the importance of holding students accountable for their own educational advancement.  Additionally, the KCS recognizes the need for the broader black community to become more self critical and self reflective as a means of building a stronger sense of community and ultimately challenging the apathy which defines the existing academic culture of our community.

Males over the age of 18 took part  in the Pledge Ceremony joining  dozens of men in the community who have  already taken the pledge for self and collective improvement.

The Kiyama Movement  also recognized select organizations from the community that have demonstrated a commitment to service in the community. Those organizations include: Oriental Masonic Lodge # 6; King Solomon Masonic Lodge #23; Widow Son Masonic Lodge #1; Epsilon Iota Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.; Delta Iota Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity; and Eta Alpha Lamda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

This event ws FREE and open to the public.
