EAST HAVEN RALLY THIS SATURDAY
EAST HAVEN — The Community of Immigrants of East Haven is gearing up for a crowded Saturday morning unity march.
From immigrant advocacy groups to residents from other towns, to the East Haven Latino community, between 600 and 1,000 people are expected to show up, according to Herman Zuniga, leader of the recently formed East Haven group.
One person possibly missing from the mix is Mayor Joseph Maturo Jr.
According to the mayor’s office, Maturo is pledging support and will be in town Saturday, but won’t be at the march. He issued a statement Wednesday regarding the event, saying, “I support the parade to advocate for unity and peace that is scheduled to take place on Saturday. Everyone in America has the right to voice their opinion. That’s what democracy is all about.”
Meanwhile, the Police Department is creating a safety plan that would deploy the entire force.
The March for Unity is being held in response to the recent indictment of four police officers on charges of mistreating Latinos and Maturo’s now-infamous “taco comment.” Participants, who are encouraged to wear white and carry American flags, will begin gathering at 11 a.m. at the corner of Main and Terrace streets. Buses will also bring people to the march site from Fair Haven.
