In an empowerment celebration of early literacy, reading, parent and family engagement, college readiness preparation, science, technology, engineering and math (S.T.E.M.) and character building/positive behavior throughout Connecticut, the holiday season and beyond.

WHEN: December 14, 2011 8:30AM – 9:00AM (Tis The Season Events & "Parent Express" Bus Tour immediately following)

WHAT: Launch of CT Parent’s Union “Parent Express” Bus Tour Press Conference & Reading of Governor Dannel Malloy Proclamation “Tis The Season To Be Reading”

WHERE: 447 Ferry Street, New Haven, CT

Elected officials, parents, community education and children and family advocates, and young adults are cordially invited to participate in the launch of the All Aboard - Parent Express, a 40 ft bus that will visit high-need locations throughout Connecticut and give education and wellness presentations, information packets, voter education and registration, hot coco, fun activities, free books, holiday and life needs giveaways.

Context: August 31, 2011; “No other issue is more critical to our economy and our way of life than education,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

It is with these sentiments, the Connecticut Parent’s Union(CTPU) and advocates for education and children/family, are bringing together parents, community members, and youth for a reading of Governor Dannel Malloy’s formal proclamation of December 16th, 2011 as “Tis the Season to be Reading” day  and  the  CTPU launch of the  Parent Express Bus Tour

Statewide, throughout the week of December 14-16,  parents, community leaders, educators and children will travel on the  40ft Parent Express Bus and engage in activities that support character building and positive behaviors in Connecticut schools as well as promote and ensure young children will be ready for kindergarten, parents will have access to child development information and parents of k-12 children will have access to resources and information to ensure their child continues to stay engaged the 2011-2012 school year and on the right track towards high school and college graduation.

“While visiting cities across the State of Connecticut, the CT Parent's Union wants to take every opportunity to promote the valuable work effective teachers, parents, community, administrators and students do every day to improve our schools. Yet, the fact still remains, too many students in Connecticut are not graduating from high school and college with the skill sets that they need to become productive citizens, engaged community leaders, and participants in a trained and qualified workforce. Needless to say, this has serious impacts on our state’s economy.
