WASHINGTON – Good or bad, American Indians have long been associated with Thanksgiving. For the past three years Native American Heritage Day has been officially celebrated by the United States on the Friday after Thanksgiving.
The recognition was first granted in the United States after President George W. Bush signed into law legislation in October 2008, which was originally introduced by Rep. Joe Baca, D-Calif. According to the Congressional Record, the Native American Heritage Day Bill was supported by the National Indian Gaming Association (NIGA) and 184 federally recognized tribes.
