Cayuga Nation actor Gary Farmer, who is most known for his role as Philbert Bono in Powwow Highway, will visit Yale University October 12 and the University of Connecticut October 14.
While on campus he will show two shorts, “Bear Tung” and “Powerball,” as well as a feature calledOne Dead Indian. The feature was made for Canadian TV and based on events that occurred on September 7, 1995 when Dudley George, a Stoney Point Ojibwa, was shot to death by Provincial Police in Ipperwash, Ontario.
He told the Hartford Courant that he tours campuses to raise awareness of Native American issues.
“A lot of times I’m dealing with Native American students. That’s good. It’s part of their history, part of their makeup,” he said. “But for every American actually, a Native American is part of who they are…I just believe that compassionate people will try to form a deeper, richer understanding of who we are as a people, until the rights of Native Americans are brought up to snuff as equals.”
The October 12 screening will be held at 4 p.m. at 212 York St. in New Haven and on Friday, October 14 will be held at 5 p.m. at Konover Auditorium, Thomas J. Dodd Center Library, 405 Babbidge Road in Storrs. Admission is free.
