Identifying Success in Schools and Programs for English Language Learners in Boston Public Schools

This presentation is a three-way collaboration among researchers and practitioners from Boston Public Schools, the Gastón Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston, and the Center for Collaborative Education (CCE).
Miren Uriarte, Professor of Human Services, College of Public and Community Service, University of Massachusetts Boston and Senior Research Associate of the Gastón Institute, will describe the enrollment and outcomes of English language learners in Boston Public Schools.
Rosann Tung, Director of Research and Evaluation at the Center for Collaborative Education will present best evidence-based ELL practices in four Boston public schools that were consistently high performing or steadily improving with respect to outcomes for English language learners.
Professor Miren Uriarte is a sociologist whose teaching and research focuses on different aspects of the intersection of race / ethnicity and social policy and the implementation of social programs and community development. She is a professor in the Graduate Program in Human Services at the College of Public and Community Service, a founding core faculty member of the Public Policy PhD Program at the John W McCormack Graduate School of Policy Studies and the founding director of the Mauricio Gastón Institute for Latino Community Development and Public Policy, where she continues as a senior research associate.

Since 2000, Rosann Tung, PhD has directed the Research and Evaluation Program of the Center for Collaborative Education (CCE), whose mission is to conduct research to inform educational policy and practice to improve equity and student achievement. She has used qualitative and quantitative methods to study school change, effective practices, and student outcomes in small, autonomous schools, alternative schools, and traditional schools and districts. Recently she has served on the English Language Learners Sub-Committee of the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education's Committee on the Proficiency Gap.
