HAMDEN — Thomas L. Friedman, a Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist, is also a “frustrated optimist” with a message: This country can emerge from a collective sense of resignation that America’s “best days are behind it,” but it has to change.

Friedman discussed the new book he co-authored with Michael Mandelbaum, “That Used to Be Us: How America Fell Behind in the World We Invented and How We Can Come Back,” before a large crowd at Quinnipiac University’s Recreation Center Wednesday night
