NO ROOM AT THE INN FOR BLACKS
NORWALK -- A predominantly black church in South Norwalk has won a $675,000 civil settlement from a Pennsylvania hotel after church members filed a class-action lawsuit claiming they were refused accommodations seven years ago because of the color of their skin.
Macedonia Church leader, the Rev. DeWitt Stevens Jr., says the award will go toward creating a bigger and better Pentecostal church in Norwalk.
"I am so thankful to God that justice has prevailed," said Stevens, 59, who filed the suit against Lancaster Host Resort and Conference Center on behalf of his 110 active church members in 2005. "I am so glad it is over with. If it went to a jury, it could have gone any way, but I think they had enough evidence stacked against them that the jury would have gone our way," he added.
