Tackling Cultural Competency in Corporate America

When UBS' 44-page dress policy went viral last December, you could hear the gasps of disbelief and laughter coming from offices on the US side of the Atlantic. From the color of employees' underwear (red is a no no) to prohibiting bankers from eating garlic, the UBS policy handbook dictated the do's and don'ts of the most intimate dress and hygiene habits of its bankers.  As American readers wondered, is this for real, UBS spokesperson Andreas Kern defended the style guide on the basis that it is designed to meet the needs of Swiss customers who are looking for "Swiss perfection."

"I wanted to let you know that I've enjoyed reading your book, Recruiting and Retaining a Diverse Workforce.

I'm currently a Capella
University student   (Organizational and Membership Building course) and part of our
required reading is your book. I wanted to let you know that I have especially enjoyed reading the personal testimonials of professionals who have experienced subtle to blantant negativity in the workplace.

I personally have experienced some hurtful situations by a prior Director. However, being young and naive, I just thought it was an isolated incident.  As I have read each testimony, I can relate to those who were discriminated against.  I now know that I'm not alone.
Thank you for writing your book and sharing it with the world. It's been an eye
opener!"

Sincerely,
Cynthia Teranishi
