Plan to spend Saturday, June 11, at the Stowe Center for Harriet Beecher Stowe’s 200th Birthday Party!  A free and family-friendly festive event.
Take a tour of the 1st floor of Stowe’s House and the award-winning historic gardens. Nook Farm Walking Tours will be offered by the Hartford Preservation Alliance. Horse drawn carriage rides by Blue Star Equiculture will take visitors for a short ride around the site.
Enjoy a musical performance by Stowe Center favorite Tierra Mestiza and an African drumming workshop by Abubakar and Babafemi: Generations of Drummers.
Sit under a tree and listen to multi-language readings from Stowe’s novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Artists Christine Boudreau and Jeanne Manzelli will be on site for crafts and watercolor painting in the Stowe gardens and Connecticut author Katherine Hauswirth will lead a writing workshop.
Under the Big Tent at 2PM will be presentations of official proclamations as well as the unveiling of the Harwinton Women’s Club Stowe 200th Anniversary Quilt and Signature Book, the Media in Education Awards, CT History Day Awards, and the Stowe and Twain Short Story Big Read Contest Awards.  The Big Tent will also house the Inspiration to Action Fair, where organizations that work for positive change in our local, state, national and global community will share information and ways people can become engaged.  President Abraham Lincoln will join Harriet Beecher Stowe and her twin daughters in greeting visitors and offer a piece of her birthday cake to all.
Take a break at the food court with local vendors Woody’s Hotdogs, The Cupcake Break, vegetarian GMonkey Mobile, and Chet’s Italian Ices.  Or, bring a picnic and relax on the lawn.
Stowe’s 200th Birthday Celebration is co-sponsored with the Evelyn W. Preston Memorial Fund, Bank of America, and the City of Hartford, Office of Cultural Affairs. Additional support from CT Commission on Culture & Tourism, Connecticut Humanities Council, Ensworth Charitable Trust, Greater Hartford Arts Council, Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, Lincoln Financial Foundation, Travelers Connecticut Foundation and Stowe Center members.
