Website commemorates Pennsylvania's historic role in America's Civil War - Lifestyles & People - The Times-Tribune: "Most people have heard the story of Rosa Parks refusing to give up her bus seat for a white passenger in Montgomery, Ala., in 1955. It's one of the defining acts of civil disobedience in the civil rights movement. Most people are probably not familiar with the story of Caroline Le Count. When the African-American schoolteacher was thrown off a Philadelphia streetcar in 1867 for not being white, she filed a complaint with the nearest police officer. The officer was unaware of a new law making segregation on public transportation illegal. Miss Le Count produced proof for the officer, who fined the conductor $100. Over the next several days, all of Philadelphia's streetcar companies were brought into compliance, ending a decades-old practice."
