Dr. Augustus A. White is Professor of Medical Education and Orthopedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School, and the author, with David Chanoff, of Seeing Patients: Unconscious Bias in Health Care. After growing up in the Jim Crow-era South, Dr. White went on to become the first African American graduate of Stanford University’s medical school, and later the first African American department chief at Harvard’s teaching hospitals.Seeing Patients draws on both original research and Dr. White’s own experiences to examine how care is affected by the unconscious prejudice of providers.
