Today, an increasing number of people regularly switch from ethnicity to ethnicity in normal discourse, thereby attempting to maximize their social, economic, and political interests. If the 2000 Census is any indication, more and more Americans - and particularly Latinos - are rejecting the notion that a single ethnic category can adequately describe them. Considering the international scale of countless interactions, as well as the incredible ethnic diversity of many localities, it is clear that developing broad ethnic repertoires - that is, ethnic flexibility - has its advantages in the age of globalization. As a growing and highly internally diverse segment of the population, Latinos are especially well positioned to respond to the emerging demands of a globalized world.

In this presentation, Dr. Rosalyn Negrón, Assistant Professor of Anthropology (UMass Boston) and Research Associate of the Gastón Institute, will discuss the unique opportunities and obstacles that Latinos face as they actively and creatively construct their ethnic identities and the ways that this impacts intra-Latino relations and Latinos' relations with other groups. Dr. Negrón argues that many Latinos are in an advantageous position to navigate ethno-racial boundaries, while embracing multiple ethnic and linguistic categories, expectations, and assumptions. The implications of this ethnic flexibility for socio-economic development and innovation in Latino communities will also be explored.
