Dr. Benjamin Carson honors 2011 Carson Scholars for their
academic excellence  at Yale University

 New Haven, Conn.— Six 2011 Carson Scholars from New Haven and Connecticut were honored for their academic excellence and humanitarian qualities at a luncheon in their honor on Friday, April 15 at 12:00 p.m. at the Dixwell – Yale Community Learning Center.

The luncheon was hosted by Yale University and world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson. Dr. Carson is a 1973 graduate of Yale College and a former fellow of the Yale Corporation, the University’s governing board.

Each year, the Carson Scholars Fund recognizes and rewards students in grades 4 – 11 who have earned the highest level of academic achievement and display strong humanitarian qualities with $1,000 college scholarship awards.  This year over 500 talented students from across the country have been named Carson Scholars, with six recipients hailing from New Haven and the surrounding areas.

The 2011 Carson Scholars are:

Paige Davis, Danbury, Saint Joseph School, grade 8
Melba Flores, New Haven, Cooperative Arts and Humanities Magnet High, grade 9
Kevin Matthews Tharakan, New Haven, Hill Regional Career High School, grade 11
Samantha O’Brien, New Haven, Common Ground High School, grade 11
Tamia Scott, New Haven, Wexler/Grant Community School, grade 6
Stephany Torres, New Haven, Christopher Columbus Family Academy, grade 5


In addition, 525 students have renewed their Carson Scholar status.  These previous winners have maintained high academic standards and a strong commitment to their communities, and are being recognized for their continued achievements.  The area’s renewed Carson Scholars include:

Josee Dobson, Hartford, Martin Luther King Jr. School, grade 8, three-time Carson Scholar
Meliha Korkutovic, Hartford, Sports and Medical Sciences Academy, grade 12, two-time Carson Scholar
Marc Lewis, New Haven, Cooperative Arts and Humanities Magnet High, grade 12, two-time Carson Scholar

To date, the Carson Scholars Fund has awarded over 4,800 college scholarships and has scholars in 45 states and the District of Columbia.  In a society that values the superficial, the Carson Scholars Fund is placing the emphasis on education by rewarding successful academics and good citizenship.
